How much does brand identity design cost in 2026?

TABLE OF CONTENTS

TL;DR
Brand identity design costs $500 to $5,000 for a starter identity (logo suite, colors, fonts and a short style guide), $5,000 to $25,000 for a full identity system with guidelines and templates, and $25,000 to $100,000 or more once brand strategy and research are included. The scope you buy matters more than who you buy it from.
- ✅ Most small businesses need a starter or full identity system, not a strategy-led agency project.
- 💰 Budget an extra 20 to 40% on top of the design quote for fonts, trademarks, photography and the first wave of branded assets.
- 🎨 A design subscription from $699 a month works best when you need the identity and the rollout, not strategy workshops.
- ⚠️ A 60-page brand book you can't afford to apply is worse value than a 12-page guide used on every asset.
Ask five designers what brand identity design costs and you'll get five answers between $300 and $150,000. They're not lying. They're quoting different things.
One designer hears "brand identity" and prices a logo with a color palette. An agency hears the same words and prices six weeks of research, positioning workshops and a 50-page manual. Neither tells you which one you actually need.
So this guide flips the usual approach. Instead of starting with who to hire, it starts with what you're buying: four scope tiers, a price for each deliverable inside them, and the costs that never show up in the first quote.
Prices come from published 2026 data from Upwork, Fiverr, Clutch, DesignRush and branding agencies, plus what we see on the production side at ManyPixels.
If you're still deciding between freelancers, agencies and subscriptions, our guide to brand identity design services and what's included covers that choice in depth.
Brand identity design cost by scope in 2026
Brand identity design in 2026 costs $100 to $2,000 for a logo only, $500 to $5,000 for a starter identity, $5,000 to $25,000 for a full identity system, and $25,000 to $200,000 or more for a strategy-led brand. Each tier includes everything in the tier below it, so the jump in price reflects added deliverables, not just a fancier provider.
The ranges come from DesignRush's branding cost breakdown, which puts a logo only at $100 to $2,000 and a basic brand identity package at $5,000 to $25,000, and from Branx's 2026 startup branding guide, which puts strategy-led agency work at $25,000 to $50,000 and full-service projects at $50,000 to $200,000 or more.
For context, Clutch reports an average branding project cost of $71,652 across verified agency reviews, but says most projects land between $10,000 and $49,999. That average is pulled up by a small number of very large projects. Don't use it as your budget.
What does a logo-only project cost?
A logo-only project costs $100 to $2,000 in 2026, depending on whether you use a marketplace gig, a contest or an experienced freelancer. You get a logo and its files, but no system for using it. That's fine for a test, and a problem the moment you need a website, a pitch deck and social templates that look like they belong together.
Logo pricing has its own set of variables (AI tools, contests, revision caps), so we cover it separately in our logo design cost guide.
It’s important to remember that a logo isn't an identity. If you only buy the logo, you'll pay for the rest later, usually in a rush, usually from a different designer who has to reverse-engineer decisions nobody wrote down.
What does a starter brand identity cost?
A starter brand identity costs $500 to $5,000. It includes a logo suite (primary, secondary and icon versions), a color palette with exact codes, one or two font choices, and a short style guide showing how to use them. It's the minimum you need for your visual identity to stay consistent across a website, social profiles and a pitch deck.
The low end comes from marketplaces. Fiverr's August 2026 cost guide puts the average "develop a brand identity" project at $2,010 and lists full identity packages from $500 to $2,010. Experienced freelancers and small studios charge $2,000 to $5,000 for logo plus basic visual identity, according to DesignRush.
What separates a good $3,000 starter identity from a bad one is rarely the logo. It's whether the color palette works on dark backgrounds, whether the fonts are licensed for web use, and whether the icon version is legible at 32 pixels. Ask to see all three before you pay the final invoice.
What does a full brand identity system cost?
A full brand identity system costs $5,000 to $25,000. On top of the starter kit, you get detailed brand guidelines, an imagery and illustration style, icon direction, and templates for the assets you'll make most often, such as social posts, presentations, email headers and business cards.
Branx puts an experienced freelancer or small boutique at $5,000 to $20,000 for this scope, over three to five weeks. DesignRush lists brand guidelines alone at $5,000 to $25,000 at agency rates, which tells you how much of the cost sits in documentation and templates rather than the logo.
And to be honest, templates are where this tier earns its money. A guidelines PDF tells your team what to do. A set of editable templates makes it the easiest thing to do. If a quote includes a 40-page manual but no templates, ask to swap half the pages for files your team will open every week.
Our guide to brand guidelines and what to put in them shows what a usable guide looks like.
How much does brand strategy add to the cost?
Brand strategy typically adds $7,500 to $40,000 at agency rates, which is why strategy-led brand projects start around $25,000. Strategy covers research, competitor analysis, positioning, audience definition and messaging. It answers "what should this brand say and to whom" before any design starts.
DesignRush breaks the strategy layer into parts: market research at $8,000 to $30,000, brand strategy and positioning at $7,500 to $40,000, and messaging and tagline work at $3,000 to $15,000. On Fiverr, focused brand strategy packages average $238 to $942, which is a very different product: a consultant's framework, not interviews with your customers.
Do you need it? To be fair, strategy is genuinely valuable when you're entering a crowded category, repositioning an existing business, or raising money on the strength of the brand story. For a local service business or a startup that already knows its customer, it's often an expensive way to write down what the founders already know.
A cheaper middle path: write a one-page positioning brief yourself (audience, problem, three competitors, the one thing you do better) and hand it to your designer. Our guide on how to create a brand identity walks through the questions to answer.
Marketplace figures come from Fiverr's branding cost guide (August 2026). Agency figures come from DesignRush and, for motion, Inkbot Design's 2026 pricing guide.
💡 The gap between columns is huge for guidelines and strategy, and much smaller for the logo itself. That's a useful signal: when an agency quote is ten times a freelancer's, most of the difference is research and documentation, not design skill.
Same scope, different provider: how the price changes
The same scope can cost five to twenty times more depending on who delivers it, mostly because of hourly rates. Upwork lists a median of $25 an hour for graphic designers, while branding agencies on Clutch average $100 to $149 an hour.
For a sense of the in-house alternative, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median graphic designer wage at $30.27/hour ($62,960/year) as of May 2025, before benefits and tools. Hiring someone full time just to build an identity rarely makes sense. Hiring someone to apply it every week might.

The brand identity costs that aren't in the quote
Plan for an extra 20 to 40% on top of the design fee. Font licenses, trademark filings, photography and the first batch of branded assets are rarely included in identity quotes, and they're where most budgets go wrong.
Font prices come from Made Good Designs' 2026 font pricing guide. Trademark, attorney and asset production costs come from Branx. Rush and revision fees come from Fiverr.
The biggest hidden cost isn't on this list, though. It's rollout. Your new identity has to land on your website, deck, social profiles, email signature, proposals and ads. If none of that is in scope, you've paid for a brand that only exists in a PDF.
⚠️ Ask every designer one question before you sign: "Which fonts are you using, and who pays for the license?" It takes ten seconds and can save you a legal headache later.
How much should you budget for brand identity?
Most small businesses should budget $2,000 to $15,000 for brand identity design, plus 20 to 40% for licenses and rollout. Pre-revenue founders can start with a starter identity under $5,000. Funded startups and established SMBs usually get the best value from a full identity system without a separate strategy engagement.
Some agencies suggest a different yardstick. Inkbot Design's rule of thumb is 5 to 15% of annual turnover for a complete SMB brand overhaul, with a refresh at £5,000 to £15,000 (about $6,300 to $19,000). Honestly, 15% of revenue is a lot for most small businesses. Treat that range as a ceiling, not a target.
Branx argues seed-stage startups get the best value at $25,000 to $40,000. That's a fair point if your brand is part of the pitch to investors. If it isn't, a well-run $10,000 identity system will carry you through your next round.

Is a design subscription cheaper for brand identity?
{{BRAND_PORTFOLIO="/dev/components"}}
A design subscription is usually cheaper when you need the identity and the assets that follow it, because one monthly fee covers both. It's not cheaper, or even the right tool, if what you really need is research-heavy brand strategy or naming workshops.
Here's how the math works. ManyPixels plans start at $699 a month (Advanced) and run to $2,599 a month (Design Team), with logos and brand guides included on every plan. If your identity system and first wave of templates take two months, that's $1,398 on Advanced or $2,398 on Business.
The same scope from an agency starts in the five figures, and you'd still be paying separately for the social graphics and deck afterward.
Two trade-offs: how the work is delivered and additional services. On Advanced and Business, your designer delivers a daily output every business day, and a logo draft is one daily output. A full identity system builds up over several weeks of daily progress, not all at once. If you want one person shaping the whole brand, the Assigned Designer plan ($1,399 a month) lets you pick a designer and talk to them on Slack.
Additional services like market and competitor research, copywriting, and web development are not included. So, a design subscription only makes sense if you already know your positioning and need a consistent design output.
If you need someone to figure out your positioning first, hire a strategist, then bring the brief to whoever builds it. We run the full numbers in are design subscriptions cheaper than freelancers?
Frequently asked questions
Bottom line
Brand identity design costs $500 to $5,000 for a starter identity, $5,000 to $25,000 for a full system and $25,000 or more once strategy is included. Most small businesses get the best value from the middle tier, with templates prioritized over a long manual. Buy the scope you'll actually use, then spend what's left on rolling it out.
